Much of the research and policy discussion about the future of “sustainable aviation fuels” has been funded by the aviation industry. This webinar features independent researchers who receive no aviation industry support.
Panelists:
Dan Lashof, Director of World Resources Institute, US
Chuck Collins, Director of Program on Inequality, Institute for Policy Studies, DC
Neil Rasmussen, Member of MIT governing board, serves on energy and climate committees
Sponsored by:
Institute for Policy Studies, Program on Inequality; Sierra Club Mass; Coalition to Stop Private Jet Expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere; Mass Power Forward; Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN); Center for Biological Diversity
As Massachusetts prepares to roll out new clean energy-saving systems following the recent passage of a major comprehensive Climate Bill, another roll-out is happening at the federal level: The Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Grand Challenge launched by the Biden-Harris administration in September, 2021. Its purpose is to spur research, production and distribution of SAFs “to put the aviation sector on a pathway to net-zero emissions by 2050.”
Whether the Grand Challenge will achieve necessary results by 2050 -- the year by which all sectors must attain net zero to preventthe worst outcomes of the climate crisis-- is up in the air. The January 8th webinar will explore the possibilities and limitations of SAFs, why the aviation industry and government agencies are supporting it, in addition to raising questions that should be considered.
The webinar may also provide new arguments for future public comments on the Hanscom developers’ SDEIR (Supplementary Draft Environmental Impact Report), once it’s filed.
If the proposed private jet hangar expansion goes forward, private jet emissions from Hanscom alone could cancel nearly 70% of the climate gains from all solar PV ever installed in Massachusetts. Massport’s plans are a clear and direct threat to Massachusetts efforts to combat climate change.
