Partner Alert: Governor signs Climate bill with Massport charter update! + MORE!

To SPJE Partner Organizations:

Dear Friend of SPJE Coalition,

Congratulations and immense thanks to all our partners who’ve worked so hard and tirelessly on getting the comprehensive climate bill passed! This achievement is amplified for us by the inclusion of updates to Massport’s 1956 charter. These updates open up new possibilities for our efforts to stop private jet expansion at Hanscom or anywhere.

Below is our latest Action Alert & Updates. Feel free to circulate it to your members and networks to keep them abreast of our doings.

In gratitude and solidarity,

Kati Winchell, SPJE Coordinator

1. Governor Healey signs MA Climate bill! – with Massport charter update!

BREAKING NEWS! Yesterday, Governor Healey signed the comprehensive version of the Climate bill advocated by us and our allies! This climate bill includes amendments to Massport’s charter (Enabling Act) which will bring it into alignment with current climate realities and MA climate goals. The signed bill will become law in 90 days.

Ultimately, both chambers showed overwhelming support for the bill. The Senate passed the bill with a vote of 38 to 2 on 10/24/24, followed by a House vote of 128 to 17 on 11/14/24.

Under the new wording, Massport’s responsibilities will expand to include promoting “environmental protection and resilience, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental justice principles." The revised charter gives equal weight to these objectives as it does to security, economic prosperity, and commerce. This update provides new opportunities and levers for the fight to stop private jet expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere.

Thank you to the work of all the climate activists and organizations that worked so hard to ensure this law was passed. This victory is truly a testimony to the collaborative action and persistence of so many! We also owe all our legislators who voted in favor of this climate bill a huge thanks, and in particular Senator Barrett, who introduced the Massport charter provision in the Senate bill, and to Representatives Cataldo, Ciccolo, Gentile, Gordon and Peisch who introduced counterpart amendments in the House.

3December Virtual Roundtable for communities fighting airport expansions – fill out form below to help us prepare

A number of municipalities in the region are also fighting airport expansion projects. SPJE is preparing a virtual Roundtable meeting in December (tentatively 12/11 at 6pm) for communities facing airport expansions to connect and learn from each other.

In this meeting we’ll crowdsource information, learn how our campaigns may overlap and where they may diverge. Each community's fight is part of a larger, urgent climate resistance. Let’s gather and learn how we can best support each other as we fight against private jet expansion.

Important! Help us make the most out of our time together: please fill out this form to provide background on your community’s situation.

Fill out the form above if you’re interested and we’ll get back to you with registration details once the date has been confirmed.

4. Recent News coverage - about SPJE and our issues:

Please donate to help us keep up the pressure and grow the momentum to stop private jet expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere!

Your donations funded the independent analysis that was the crux of the argument Tepper used to send the developers back to the drawing board when the DEIR was rejected. It was referenced throughout the DEIR certificate starting on the first page. This was a critical piece of our success that wouldn't have happened without your grassroots financial support. Thank you for all that you've already contributed, and if you're able to donate today, please do. With the Supplemental DEIR now required, we'll be looking to fund additional research to uncover the extent of the harm this expansion will cause.

Onward!
The SPJE Team
