1. Jan 8th SAF Webinar: Update & Action – email Governor Healey and Climate Chief Hoffer!
|
Last year, our 1,500+ public comments and the decisive independent analysis contributed to EEA Secretary Rebecca Tepper’s rejection of the Hanscom developers’ DEIR (Draft Environmental Impact Report). Together, we knocked many of their outrageous claims out of the park!
However, there’s a remaining argument we have yet to dispel: the aviation industry’s assertion, enthusiastically embraced by the Hanscom developers, that it’s okay for commercial and private aviation to grow indefinitely because Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) will “green” aviation in the distant future. This is an irresponsible and unacceptable response to the climate crisis.
The January 8th Webinar “Sustainable Aviation Fuels: Can They Meet 2050 Climate Goals?”, took a close look at the pros and cons of four types of SAFs (electric, hydrogen, biofuels, and synthetic fuels), and their respective viability and scalability. Three independent researchers, with no funding or affiliation with the aviation industry, offered their expertise on the subject and, in the words of one, concluded:
“Based on our research, there is no scalable alternative to kerosene-based jet fuels that will move at the pace of climate change to offset these harms.” (-- Chuck Collins, Institute for Policy Studies, Program on Inequality, and co-author of the report Alternatives to Jet Fuels:Promising Solution or Industry Hype?)
To illustrate his point, Collins offered a slide:
Pace of SAF Production:
- In 2022, the U.S. produced 15.8 million gallons of SAF
- 2030 goal: 3 billion gallons: A 18,887 percent increase.
- 2050 goal: 35 billion gallons: would be a 227,400 percent increase” [Slide 29]

Email Governor Maura Healey and Climate Chief Melissa Hoffer, and ask them and their staff to watch the Jan 8th SAF webinar and read the related materials to get important information about SAFs from independent researchers.
Tell them that we should not be expanding anything until we have green solutions in hand, not in the distant future – and that this is particularly true of private aviation which serves a fraction of Massachusetts’ population, mostly for recreational use, and which are known to be the most polluting form of travel per passenger.
Ask them not to let Massport airports expand fossil fuel-based operations, given that science shows true SAFs are not attainable at scale by 2050, and the resulting generation of GHGs in the interim will dramatically undercut any climate gains that actions from our recently passed Climate bill are poised to achieve.
