The largest single development in Hanscom’s history.
Get the Facts
The Proposal.
This immense Hanscom expansion is the largest single development in Hanscom’s history.
The project has the potential to single-handedly undercut the total combined greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reductions that Massachusetts and its towns are working diligently to achieve. For this reason alone, it should not be allowed to go forward at Hanscom – or at any other airport.

Massport is leading the proposal to expand pivate jet capacity at Hanscom Field. Massport is not a state agency. Per their website, "Massport was enabled by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1956 as an independent public authority. Massport is governed by a seven member Board." Source
Only Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has veto power over Massport plans.

Hanscom Field is the busiest general aviation airport in New England, and the second busiest in terms of total flight operations. Hanscom has approximately 165,000 operations per year, compared with 337,000 operations at Logan Airport. A very small fraction (less than 1%) of Hanscom operations are military flights from Hanscom Air Force Base.
Today, the breakdown of uses at Hanscom Field is as follows:
• 80% – Propeller planes
• 16% – Corporate jets
• 1% – Military
• 1% – Medical
• 1% – Charters

The proposed development would add nearly 500,000 square feet of hangar space for 27 private jet hangars on 49 acres. With an estimated 2-3 jets per hangar, the expansion would triple the private jet capacity at Hanscom Field while also:.
• Reconfiguring of taxiways to support larger, heavier private jets
• Impacting 35 Environmental Justice populations within a 5-mile radius in Billerica, Burlington, Lexington and Waltham
• Adding 36.75 acres of impervious (non water absorbent) paving, thereby increasing the risk of water contamination
• Clearcuting mature trees (mature trees are already the most efficient CO2 sequestration technology nature has to offer)
