Hanscom Private Jet Expansion Named in Beacon Hill’s Turkeys of the Year
“…if there’s anyone who knows when and how to walk away from a public-relations nightmare, it’s new Massport chief Rich Davey, who survived hellish stints at the T and Boston 2024. His opportunity to stick a fork in another egregious turkey – the scheme to triple Hanscom Field’s private jet capacity drawing massive pushback from area residents, environmentalists and state regulators – is fast approaching, with the developers poised to make another run at it. Do Davey and Healey really give a damn about cutting the greenhouse gases that private jets belch so prolifically? Warns Sen. Michael Barrett: ‘There is no way you can put in a whole bunch of essentially garages for private jets and still claim ever again…to be concerned about climate.’”

Climate Rollback Bill stalled following storm of opposition
After hundreds of Massachusetts climate advocacy organizations stormed the State House with emails, calls and visits in opposition to Rep. Cusack’s regressive climate bill, which would have gutted hard-won climate laws of several decades, H.4744 stalled in the House Ways & Means Committee on Monday, Nov 17th.
This is an important interim victory, demonstrating the effectiveness and power of speaking out en masse. Kudos to our partner organizations for their swift response, essential action alerts, and incredible mobilizing which resulted in this key achievement.
Looking ahead, the bill is expected to be re-introduced, likely in a redrafted form, early 2026 – at which time the battle will resume. How it evolves will have major impacts on every climate and clean energy initiative and fight – including our campaign to stop private jet expansion at Hanscom or Anywhere, and Massport’s updated charter.

Concord's Great Meadows Walk with Sierra Club Mass & SPJE
SPJE & Sierra Club Mass hosted a guided walk at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord with world-renowned naturalist Peter Alden and over forty participants. The educational walk was regularly interrupted by loud low flying aircraft, as Great Meadows is located directly under the flight path of Massport-owned Hanscom Field airport. Participants learned how the proposed private jet hangar expansion at Hanscom could generate 6,000 additional flights annually over this valued refuge and actions they could take to stop it.

Forum on Hanscom Air Quality Study Update
On September 30th, a forum was held in Bedford focused on a study conducted by Dr. Neelakshi Hudda of Tufts University on ultrafine particles (UFP) and lead concentrations near Massport-owned Hanscom Field civil airport. The Bedford Citizen reported that the study “regarding air quality impacts in the four towns that border Hanscom Field found that there is a high concentration of ultrafine particles (UFP) and airborne lead.” UFPs, through their chemical signatures, are directly linked to the fuel used to operate private jets.

Stay poised for Hanscom Developers’ SDEIR report
In June 2024, EEA Secretary Tepper rejected the Hanscom developers’ DEIR (Draft Environmental Impact Report) after receiving over 1,500 public comments, 13,500 petition signatures, and an important independent analysis that refuted the developers’ claims. Tepper instructed the developers to go back to the drawing board to produce an SDEIR (Supplementary DEIR). The SDEIR has not yet been filed.
