Update on the Developers' DEIR
|
The developers have postponed their DEIR multiple times now thanks to the consistent efforts of our campaign, pushing it back from last fall to the winter. They are once again postponing it, this time to a new expected filing date of March 15th.
It will be made publicly available about a week later–March 21st–at which point we will alert you about the start of a critical 4-week public comment period. Governor Healey–along with members of our state legislature and Congress–will be watching closely, and this is where you will come in!
It will be up to us to show Governor Healey – through our public comments – that she has statewide support to stop the reckless private jet expansion proposal. We’ll provide you with a complete letter-writing toolkit when the time comes, so stay tuned for our “DEIR Action Alert!" notice.

The MEPA Environmental Review Process
|
The DEIR is the second of three reports in the state environmental review process under MEPA (Office of MA Environmental Policy Act). The first report, called the Environmental Notification Form (ENF), was filed a year ago on 1/17/23. This was the first time that the magnitude of the proposed plans was revealed to the public. The third report, called the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) will follow the DEIR later in the process.

The developers are currently saying that they may be reducing their original number of hangars from 27 to 17, which Senator Mike Barrett calls "the oldest political trick in the book."
Whether the developers build 27 or 17 new hangars is irrelevant.
The fact is that an expansion of any size is unacceptable given that private jet emissions at Hanscom alone already cancel nearly 50% of the climate gains from all solar PV ever installed in Massachusetts.
The proposed expansion would further undermine our Commonwealth's efforts to combat climate change and achieve our 2050 climate goals, at a time when UN climate scientists are urging all sectors to make drastic and immediate cuts in their existing greenhouse gas emissions.

Municipal Resolution Campaign—want to help grow the Muni campaign?

We recently launched the Municipal Resolution Campaign, and it’s already sparked activity in towns and cities in eastern and western Mass where residents are actively urging their municipalities to pass a Resolution to oppose private jet hangar expansion at Hanscom or anywhere. The goal of this campaign is to broaden our base and demonstrate to Governor Healey that she has the support of a state-load of people to stop reckless private jet expansion at Hanscom or anywhere.
